Sun Mian
Regarded as one of the most respected media persons in China, since 1996 Sun has been Publisher of New Weekly magazine, which is noted for its cutting-edge treatment of current affairs.
Sun started his media career in Guangzhou in 1977. In 1987, he participated in launching the first color-printed entertainment newspaper of China and held the post of vice-chief editor as well as the manager of the advertisement department. Sun has also produced pop concerts, including Faye Wong in 1987, Paul Simon in 1990, and the concert of Sam Hui Koon Kit in 1992 in Guangzhou. In the following years, he founded Morning Newspaper in Guangzhou in 1993 and Weekly Chinese News in 1995. In August 1996, he created New Weekly and took up the post of Publisher. It was in the same year that he organized the concert of Wakin Chau in Guangzhou. In 2002, Mr. Sun initiated the Lijiang Snow-mountain Music Festival in alliance with legendary Chinese rock star Cui Jian.
Mr. Sun is the holder of two personal records that are unique in the world: he is the oldest Chinese person to climb Mount Everest from the north side, and he is the sole person to erect the flag of his own magazine at the peak of the mountain.
